Sunset Valley Orchids 2017 Cattleya List

Compact Catts

Compact growing Cattleyas have gained considerable interest with hobbyist for some important reasons.

  • Plants will stay under 12” tall and bloom in 4”- 5” pots.
  • They are space savings so with more plants per sq. ft. makes for more flowers per sq. ft.
  • Flowers are appealing, with large size and wide range of colors.
  • New hybrids are bred to carry the flowers well, on strong stems that don't require staking.
  • They grow well under a wide range of cultural conditions.

The crosses listed represent the most modern breeding available, with many outstanding hybrids having great potential.  I have spent hours describing the potential of the offspring, so read on!

SVO 5559
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Fordyce Prelude 'Pinnacle' AM/AOS x Lc. Tokyo Magic '6-1' AM/AOS)

The breeding behind Fordyce Prelude (Slc. California Apricot x Blc. Horizon Flight) is amazing: both parents founded significant breeding lines, with many exceptional crosses to their credit.  The cultivar 'Pinnacle' has wide petals, giving the flowers a very full shape, and the color is yellow with dark red flares and a dark red lip.  Truly a beautiful blossom!  Tokyo Magic is a proven breeder that has given rise to many exceptional hybrids.  This grex imparts good flower shape, red lip color, sturdy stems and a compact upright plant habit.  I'm looking forward to seeing the full-shaped, bright yellow flowers with dark red lips that this cross will produce.  As a bonus, many should have deep red flares!

SVO 5709
Pot. New Hybrid (Bc. Little Mermaid 'Janet' AM/AOS x Slc. Angel's Blush 'SVO')

Little Mermaid is C. walkeriana x Bc. Maikai (B. nodosa x C. bowringiana), so just three species are represented in Little Mermaid.  The flowers are lavender-pink with a broad spotted lip and the charm of the B. nodosa grandparent. Slc. (Lc. Angel Heart x Slc. Fire Fantasy) has a strong stem that holds very nice, shapely pink flowers displaying darker pink-lavender flares.  This is a bit of “novelty” breeding, and we're looking for pink splashing on the petals and large, broad lips.  Plants will be compact growers, and I expect them to bloom twice a year.  This is the first to bloom Picture.

SVO 5743
Eplc. New Hybrid (Lc. Koolau Seagulls Volcano Queen' AM/AOS x Epc. Kyoguchi 'M. Sauno' mutation)

This grex combines the floriferous nature of Koolau Seagulls, with 14 or more, deep red flowers on a straight upright stem with Kyoguchi, which has been producing outstanding crosses. This combination will capitalize on Kyoguchi's strengths, producing progeny that will flower at an early age.  Many of the 3” pots are already showing sheaths, and mature plants will have branching inflorescences with many flowers.  As a bonus, I expect these to have a wonderful fragrance, too!  Flower color will range in the sunset tones with some solid reds.  Overall, this is an excellent novelty hybrid and well worth growing.

SVO 5769
Pot. New Hybrid (Pot. Rubescent Fires 'SVO Red Blast' x Slc. Life's Charm 'SVO Fantastic Flare')

Pot. Rubescent Fires (Lc. Spring Fires x Pot. Rubescence) has produced red hot reds, with great color, shape and stem strength with both parents have deep red pigmentation.  Life's Charm (Blc. Izumi Charm x Slc. Circle of Life) has very wide, rounded petals with a coral red color.  This cross should carry 4-5 large, deep red, beautifully full-formed and rounded flowers, held on strong stems above the foliage, all on compact plants.  These are looking excellent!
3” pots

SVO 5758
Pot. Lebenkreis (Pot. Rubescence 'SVO' AM/AOS x Slc. Circle of Life 'Fordyce Herald Angel' AM/AOS)

Both parents are good breeders, and earlier results of this style of breeding have validated this reputation.  The flowers are a deep red with excellent form and size; some flowers will measure more than 5” across!  Plants stay under 10” tall and flower twice a year.  This is a high quality cross - take a look at these pictures of the first blooming plants Picture 1, 2.  What more can you ask for in a red Cattleya hybrid?

SVO 5774
Pot. New Hybrid (Slc. Kagaribi Dawn 'Red Star' x Pot. Star Fire 'Rockin' Red')

Kagaribi Dawn has star-shaped blooms in an intense red color that is quite an attention getter.  The flowers of Star Fire (Lc. Trick or Treat x Rubescence) are produced on a strong stem holding 5-7 deep red blooms.  This grex was made to further develop intensely-colored, deep red flowers of starry shape, held high on tall inflorescences.  These will flower in mid February.  Limited Supply.

SVO 5796
Slc. NEW HYBRID (Slc.Kagaribi Dawn 'Red Star' BM/JOGAx L. Gold Star 'Dean's Gold')

Kagaribi Dawn flowers with starry shaped blooms in an intense red color that always attracts attention.  Gold Star (flava x harpophylla) has an intense orange-yellow color with 15 plus flowers per inflorescence.  Both have a starry open shape and intense color.  I expect flowers in sunset tones from this novelty hybrid. One just flowered with bright yellow petals and sepals with a dark crimson red lip, very eye catching. Very Limited Supply.

SVO 5798
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Picotee Flight 'SVO' x Slc. Mari's Vision 'SVO')

Good quality flowers with a nice picotee are pretty hard to come by in the Cattleya alliance, but a good hybridizer will rise to the occasion!  The flowers of Picotee Flight (Horizon Flight x Love Sound) have a pretty nice color combination: yellow flowers with a beautiful red picotee around the petal margins.  The plants have sturdy stems holding 5-7 flowers above the foliage.  Mari's Vision (Lc. Mari's Song x Slc. Fire Fantasy) really has an exceptional picotee - just take a look at the picture!  Its drawback, however, is that only 2 flowers are produced.  With this cross, we are looking for flowers with a well-defined picotee, improved flower count on sturdy stems, and, of course, well-formed blossoms.  Does it sound like I'm asking for too much?  If I were a betting man, this is one I would seriously consider!

SVO 5813
Pot. New Hybrid (Pot. Burana Angel 'SVO II' HCC/AOS x Pot. Martha Clarke 'Orange Tart')

This cross and SVO 5799 are similar, using the same Burana Angel (Burana Beauty x Slc. Bright Angel) but a different Martha Clarke (Slc. Circle of Life x Blc. Love Sound). 'Orange Tart' has superior shape, and I consider it the best formed flower of this grex. The orange petals have a red blush and bold red flare - an outstanding color combination! These will flower with a variety of petal flaring and patterns.  I expect that many will produce golden-orange flowers with deep red flares.  The plants will carry 5-7 flowers that are well supported, as both parents have good stem strength.

SVO 5820
Pot. New Hybrid (Slc. Sierra Gem 'SVO' HCC/AOS x Pot. Firehouse 'SVO')

Sierra Gem (Slc. Hazel Boyd x Sl. Pole Star) was an insightful hybrid made by Alan Koch of Gold Country Orchids.  The plants are small growing and consistently high quality - almost every one is good.  The well-shaped blooms range in color from solid red to sunset shades, with a few pure yellow.  Firehouse (Blc. Love Sound x Pot. Rubescence) has 3-4 rounded red-purple flowers held well on sturdy stems.  These will be compact-growing plants with a clean upright growth habit.  The well-rounded flowers will be mostly in red colors and supported nicely above the foliage.  These should start to flower in 3” pots.

SVO 5839
Pot. New Hybrid (Pot. Paradise Rose 'SVO' x Pot. Higher Multiplier 'Shocking Red')

If you want the darkest, most vibrant crimson-red flowers imaginable, this grex will do it!  Paradise Rose (Slc. Pink Doll x Blc. Toshie Aoki) has great color and shows an interesting phenomenon of color dominance.  The flowers of Pink Doll are dark purple, while Blc. Toshie Aoki is dominated by the influence of the lip from C. dowiana.  The yellow and red of Toshie Aoki are recessive for color but known to intensify purple.  Paradise Rose combines these traits and produces intense crimson-red-purple flowers.  Now imagine this cross with Higher Multiplier (Pot. Rubescence x Slc. Pink Doll).  Take a look at the Picture - what amazing form and color!  The offspring are going to have incredible color, superior shape, a compact growth habit and the tendency to flower twice a year.  Truly the epitome of the modern red compact Cattleya!

SVO 5958
Pot. New Hybrid (Pot. Dream Circle 'SVO' AM/AOS x Pot. Paradise Rose 'SVO')

The parents of Dream Circle (Slc. Circle of Life Pot. Hisako Akatsuka) are both known for producing excellent offspring, and Dream Circle has earned 10 AOS awards.  Plants mature at 10” tall and produce beautifully formed 4-5” flowers twice a year.  Paradise Rose (Slc. Pink Doll x Blc. Toshie Aoki) demonstrates an interesting phenomenon of color dominance.  The dark purple flowers of Pink Doll are crossed to Blc. Toshie Aoki, a grex dominated by the influence of C. dowiana, which is recessive for color and intensifies purples.  The result is the intense crimson-red-purple flowers of Paradise Rose.  Here we combine superior shape from Dream Circle with intense color from Paradise Rose; the results should be exceptional!  These will bloom twice a year.

SVO 5965
Pot. Mem. Marcia Dell (Lc. Tokyo Magic '6-1' AM/AOS x Pot. Love Passion 'Island Romance')

Tokyo Magic (Lc. Irene Finney x L. briegeri) is a proven breeder with many exceptional hybrids to its credit.  It imparts good flower shape, red lip color, strong stems and a compact upright plant habit.  Love Passion (Lc. Trick or Treat x Slc. William Farrell) has a true orange flower with a touch of red in the lip.  The strong stem carries 7 to 9 blooms above the foliage.  This cross produces robust plants with nice-sized flowers in orange to gold, many with a touch of red in the lip. Picture of one of the first to bloom.

SVO 6004
L. Summit (L. Summit 'Tomiko' HCC/AOS x self)

This is a very interesting hybrid, producing impressive flowers on long stems.  The parents of Summit are L. anceps and L. lyonsii.  L. lyonsii was once considered a Schomburgkia and occurs in the Caribbean.  L. anceps is native to Mexico and very tolerant of summer heat and winter cold.  The cultivar 'Tomiko' is a great grower.  It withstands both cold and heat, and the plant is compact, developing new leads and forming specimens quickly.  The plants from this selfing will produce inflorescences about 3' long with 5-7 flowers that are light lavender to a near solid dark purple.  Many will be spotted and veined darker lavender, with a lip that is veined dark purple.

SVO 6119
Pot. New Hybrid (Lc. Tropical Aurora 'SVO' x Pot. Burana Beauty 'Burana' HCC/AOS)

Tropical Aurora (Lc. Aussie Sunset x Lc. Tokyo Magic) has an amazing flower color: an intense yellow that is rarely seen.  The plant is vigorous and compact, with strong upright stems of blossoms in late March and April.  Burana Beauty is a very showy hybrid, sporting a bright yellow flower with red flares and a red lip.  As a bonus, plants flower twice a year.  These will be very colorful, and we are expecting brilliant yellow flowers, many with red flaring, on strong stems that hold the 4-7 three-inch-wide flowers above the foliage.

SVO 6195
Epi. Little Miss Sunshine (Epi. magnoliae (=conopseum) 'SVO' x Epi. xanthinum f. compactum 'Resplendens' CBR/AOS)

This is a mini-epidendrum with yellow flowers that look like a small yellow Epi, but slightly reminiscent of the magnoliae parent.  These should be quite cold hardy, tolerating temperatures into the upper 30's.  This is a very novel Epidendrum.  Plants are flowering in 3” pots and will stay about 8” tall when mature. Everyone has room for these. Picture of a first bloomer.

SVO 6207
L. New Hybrid (L. Brazilian Tangerine 'SVO' x L. Seagull 'SVO')

This is the next step in our advanced rupicolous Laelia breeding.  We have worked with many primary hybrids over the years, and here we have chosen two of the best to kick off the next generation.  Brazilian Tangerine (Seagulls Tangerine 'SVO' AM/AOS x L. milleri 'Dr. Koopowitz Red' HCC/AOS) and Seagull (L. briegeri 'Star of Brazil' AM/AOS x L. milleri 'Dr. Koopowitz Red' HCC/AOS) are outstanding parents, and the results should be exceptional.  These will have all the charm and charisma of the rupicolous Laelia species and be as easy to grow as any hybrid Cattleya.  This is a major improvement!  These plants are blooming size already, only 2 years from flask!!!  Flower color will range from orange to red.  First to bloom 19 months form flasks Picture.

SVO 6208
Blc.  Laughing Boy (Lc. Dennis Olivas 'Best' x Blc. Love Sound 'Dogashima' AM/AOS)

These will be fantastic yellow flowers, many with red flares, on strong upright stems.  I originally made this cross more than a decade ago, and the results were really nice.  Customers have been asking for years for the remake and here it is!  Highly recommended.  Pictures of the first to bloom Picture 1, 2, 3.

SVO 6229
Pot. New Hybrid (Lc. Florence Lin 'Diamond Orchids' AM/AOS x Pot. Star Fire 'Sky Rocket')

Florence Lin (C. leopoldii x L. milleri) produces 17 starry well-arranged flowers in dark red with a darker red lip on a tall stem. Star Fire (Lc. Trick or Treat x Pot. Rubescence) has full-shaped starry red flowers with lots of influence from Trick or Treat.  This cross will capitalize on the potential for dark red color and high flower count on good upright stems.  Plants will bear will bear red stars on tall stems held above the foliage, almost like exploding skyrockets.

Pot. New Hybrid (Lc. Spring Fires 'Lynette #1' x Pot. Star Fire 'New Year Surprise')

Spring Fires (Lc. Fires of Spring x Lc. Fire Island) has strong upright stems carrying 5-9 red flowers with darker red lips.  It is proving to be an excellent parent with dominance for color, strong stems and bloom period.  Star Fire (Lc. Trick or Treat x Pot. Rubescence) has full shaped starry red flowers with lots of influence from Trick or Treat, which imparts good flower count.  These will carry 7-9 solid red flowers on strong stems held high above the foliage in January and February, just in time for the Lunar New Year.

SVO 6249
Pot. New Hybrid (Pot. Higher Multiplier 'Shocking Red'   x Pot. Blast Furnace 'Red Hot')

The development of red mini-catts has come a long way.  Flower size has been greatly improved as have flower form and, most importantly, plant vigor.  Higher Multiplier (Pot. Rubescence x Slc. Pink Doll) is a real beauty.  Take a look at the picture - what amazing form and color!  Blast Furnace (Pot. Rubescence x Sc. Beaufort) also has an incredibly red hot color and excellent shape picture.  This breeding is designed to produce solid red mini-catt plants with flowers that look like scaled-down versions of their standard/large-sized Cattleya counterparts.  These plants will flower in 3” pots, mature at 5-6” tall, and bloom twice a year, once in winter and again in late summer.

Pot. New Hybrid (Pot. Winners' Circle 'SVO' AM/AOS x Pot. Rubescence 'SVO' AM/AOS)

The late Frank Fordyce developed a very productive hybrid, Slc. Circle of life (Lc. Culminant x Soph. coccinea), which has flowers of exceptional size, color and form.  Hybrids made with Circle of Life exhibit consistently high quality flowers.  Winners' Circle (Pot. Sally Taylor x Slc. Circle of Life) was a very successful hybrid, producing flowers of outstanding size and quality.  Frank Fordyce also developed Rubescence (Blc. Oconee x Slc. Seagulls Apricot), a beautifully-formed solid dark red with a darker lip.  This newest cross is the type of hybrid I believe he would be making today.  These are going to have large 4 ½” flowers of full shape in intense colors of dark red-magenta.  This is a good hybrid for the discerning collector and to keep the breeding lines developed by Frank Fordyce alive and in the hands of hobbyists.

SVO 6261
Pot. New Hybrid (Pot. Martha Clarke 'Amazing'x Pot. Burana Love 'SVO' AM/AOS)

The combination of (Slc. Circle of Life x Blc. Love Sound) is Martha Clarke, also known as “my wife's namesake.”  This grex benefited from the breeding qualities of its parents, inheriting the best qualities of both.  Martha's have great flower color, shape, growth habit and ease of blooming.  Burana Love (Pot. Burana Beauty x Blc. Love Sound) also benefited from its parents.  One standout is the cultivar 'SVO,' which has shapely, bright yellow flowers and bold red flares with great presentation. The expectation here is for a range of flower colors, primarily oranges and yellows, with most having red flares. The flowers will be presented nicely and produced 4-5 per stem.

Blc. New Hybrid (Blc. Hawaiian Discovery 'Fluorescent Orange' HCC/AOS x Blc. Love Sound 'Lemon Star' HCC/AOS)

Hawaiian Discovery 'Fluorescent Orange' (Blc. Orange Nuggett x Blc. Bouton D'Or) has amazing orange color - a real shocker!  For years, the yellow flowers of Love Sound (Blc. Bouton d'Or x L. briegeri) have played an important part in SVO's hybridizing program. Its offspring consistently show good breeding qualities: a slightly upswept petal stance, good color, increased flower count, and the development of compact plants with pseudobulbs that cluster tightly together.  This combination of parents creates an excellent opportunity for a hybrid with well-presented golden yellow flowers of good form on a compact growing plant.

SVO 6268
Pot. New Hybrid (Blc. Love Blush 'Love Blush'x Pot. Burana Love 'SVO' AM/AOS)

Love Blush (Blc. Love Sound x Blc. Picotee Passion) has a delicately beautiful flower color of light yellow with a light red-rose blush around the margins of the segments.  The 7-9 flowers are supported nicely and have a very pleasing arrangement.  Burana Love (Pot. Burana Beauty x Blc. Love Sound) also holds its blossoms well and has shapely, bright yellow flowers with bold red flares.  Hybrids based on Love Sound, like this one, will present their 5-7 well-formed flowers nicely in colors ranging from orange to yellow, most with red flares.

Pot. New Hybrid (Pot. Mem. Jim Nickou 'James' HCC/AOS x Pot. Golden Circle 'OPRL')

The Mem. Jim Nickou (Blc. Xanthette x Sc. Beaufort) has bright yellow flowers with just a bit of red on the lip.  Excellent shape and twice-a-year flowering make this a desirable parent.  Golden Circle (Blc. Goldenzelle x Slc. Circle of Life) is one of my most reliable breeding plants.  It imparts fine form, size, color and its ability to bloom up to three times a year.  Each parent has an excellent breeding record, and this is a very promising hybrid!  We are expecting golden/yellow flowers of exceptional shape on plants that will bloom twice a year.

SVO 6281
Lc. New Hybrid (Lc. Pink Treasure 'SVO' x Lc. Finckeniana 'Kennedys' 4N)

It's hard to put into words, but there is something so appealing about pink flowers with yellow lips.  Pink Treasure (Lc. Tiny Treasure x C. loddigesii) flowers are produced 4-5 per inflorescence in a beautiful soft pink with golden yellow lips.  Finckeniana is a hybrid made with the Mexican species, L. albida.  This will give a great stem habit, increase flower count and, as an additional benefit, add temperature tolerance to the offspring.  This will be a nice hybrid, with plants producing 5-9 flowers of great shape in pink with yellow lips. Similar to SVO 6571. Check out the first to bloom!  very nice  Pic 1

SVO 6295
Slc. Josee Cousineau (Slc. Final Touch 'Mendenhall' AM/AOS x Slc. Circle of Life 'Trailblazer' AM/AOS)

This is a good hybrid for the discerning collector.  Both parents used in this cross were developed by the late Frank Fordyce.  The grex Circle of Life (Lc. Culminant x Soph. coccinea) has flowers of exceptional size, color and form.  Final Touch (Slc. California Apricot x Lc. Drumbeat) was also a successful hybrid, producing flowers of outstanding quality.  This hybrid is what I believe Frank Fordyce would be making today.  These are going to exhibit consistently high flower quality, with large 4 ½” flowers of very full shape in coral red colors.

SVO 6299
Pot. Norma Sue (Pot. Mem. Jim Nickou 'James' HCC/AOS x Blc. Love Sound 'Dogashima' AM/AOS)

The Mem. Jim Nickou (Blc. Xanthette x Sc. Beaufort) has bright yellow flowers with just a bit of red on the lip.  Excellent shape and twice-a-year flowering make this a desirable parent.  Love Sound has played an important role in our hybridizing program.  Its offspring consistently show good breeding qualities, like slightly upswept petal stance, good color, increased flower count, and a nice plant habit.  Bright yellow flowers in spring are a sure thing with this cross, and good flower form and stem habit will prevail.

Pot. New Hybrid (Pot. Final Touch 'Mendenhall' AM/AOS x Pot. William Farrell 'Native Son')

Final Touch (Slc. California Apricot x Lc. Drumbeat) was a successful hybrid, producing flowers of outstanding quality in a range of colors.  The cultivar 'Mendenhall' is a peach/salmon colored flower and a red lip.  William Farrell (Pot. Helen Veliz x Blc. Llano) blooms with 5-6 well displayed flowers in a light salmon/pink/orange color, excellent shape, and a beautifully formed lip. This hybrid should develop new soft pastel colored flowers in shades of coral and salmon.  A nice attribute of this cross will be good presentation of exceptional full formed flowers.

Blc. Volcano Prince (Lc. Trick or Treat 'Orange Beauty' AM/AOS x Blc. Love Sound 'Dogashima' AM/AOS)

Trick or Treat (L. Icarus x Lc. Chit Chat) produces amazing heads of 15 or more starry orange flowers.  The bright yellow flowers of Love Sound (Blc. Bouton d'Or x L. briegeri) have been a part of our hybridizing program for years, and this parent consistently delivers good results.  Expect these to flower in colors from yellow to orange.  The robust plants will have 7-12 well presented flowers on strong stems.  The plants are very vigorous and look excellent!

Pot. New Hybrid (Blc. Love Sound 'Dogashima' AM/AOS x Pot. Final Touch 'Mendenhall' AM/AOS)

Love Sound (Blc. Bouton d'Or x L. briegeri), with its bright yellow flowers, has consistently delivered good results as a parent.  Final Touch (Slc. California Apricot x Lc. Drumbeat) was a successful hybrid, producing flowers of outstanding quality in a range of colors.  The cultivar 'Mendenhall' is a peach/salmon colored flower and a red lip.  This style of hybrid is predictable, and this grex will produce many-well formed yellow flowers with contrasting red lips on a handsome plant.

Pot. New Hybrid (Pot. Paradise Rose 'SVO'x Pot. Winners Circle 'Champion')

The grex Paradise Rose (Slc. Pink Doll x Blc. Toshie Aoki) demonstrates an interesting phenomenon of color dominance. By incorporating this trait with the beautifully formed flowers and excellent color of Winners' Circle (Pot. Sally Taylor x Slc. Circle of Life), flowers of outstanding quality and color will be produced.  This might just be one of those crosses with unusual grandeur.

Pot. New Hybrid (Lc. Spring Fires 'Lynette #3' x Pot. Martha Clarke 'Amazing')

Spring Fires (Lc. Fires of Spring x Lc. Fire Island) has strong upright stems carrying 5-9 red flowers with darker red lips.  It is proving to be an excellent parent with dominance for color, strong stems and bloom period. It is hard to improve on these parents, but… this might just be the combination that incorporates the best of both.  These are expected to have great stems, holding 7-9 flowers above the foliage.  The colors will range from solid red to medium yellow brushed with red flares, and all the flowers will have dark red lips.

Rubescence (Blc. Oconee x Slc. Seagulls Apricot) has a beautifully formed, solid dark red flower with a darker lip that blooms twice a year.  It is an excellent parent, which is it's mentioned so many times in this listing.  Paradise Rose (Slc. Pink Doll x Blc. Toshie Aoki) demonstrates the color dominance of the dark purple flowers from Pink Doll and the recessive color influence of the bright yellow Toshie Aoki.  These are going to have large 4” flowers of full shape in intense dark red-magenta, with even darker red lips.  This is a good hybrid for the discerning collector.

The flowers of Rubescence (Blc. Oconee x Slc. Hisako Akatsuka x Slc. California Apricot) is from Suwada Orchid Nursery in Japan and has been honored with a Silver Medal from the Japan Orchid Growers Association. The flowers have exceptionally wide petals that are quite remarkable, and it also blooms twice a year and is an easy grower.  This will produce flowers that will wow you!   I am expecting really wide petals, bright red color and large full-shaped lips in a darker red.  These flowers will have the look of modern standard red cattleyas, but the plants will only be 8” tall, about half the size of their standard counterparts.  These will flower easily in 4” pots, with many flowering for the first time in 3” pots!  If you like look of standard Cattleya flowers but are running out of space, there's still room for one of these!

I'm really interested in seeing these bloom.  Golden Circle (Blc. Goldenzelle x Slc. Love Passion) has well-presented and well-formed orange-red flowers with a nice red lip.  Breeding for orange petals and sepals with a red lip is a challenge, and incorporating good form and presentation, as well as ease of growth and flowering, adds difficulty.  This is one of the first crosses with a strong possibility of achieving this objective. Be sure to click out this picture first, it looks like a standard sized flower with full form and lip, now look at this picture .....  amazing, a mini-catt that look just like large standard flowers!!!

Here is an interesting new direction in flared breeding.  Newberry Fireworks (Lc. Zip (milleri x tenebrosa), but sanguiloba has more flowers per stem and a longer inflorescence than milleri.  Flowers will be an intense red-orange with dark purple-red lips, a very attractive color combination, and the stems will carry 7-9 starry flowers.  This is a Picture of the first to bloom.

When 'Martha's' was awarded, it carried 350 flowers on one inflorescence with many branches and side branches!  It is also highly fragrant, thus the old name aromatica.  Plants of profusa have many flowers, up to 100 per stem, also with branches and side branches.  This species was named for its profuse flowering habit.   Here we are expecting 100+ fragrant flowers on branched inflorescences with light yellow tepals and red-purple veined lips.  I need a good name for this cross... how about Enc. Seagulls Apricot) has produced many excellent hybrids.  Its good shape, solid dark red flowers and darker red lip are impressive, and are transmitted consistently to its offspring.  Orpetii (L. pumila x Soph. coccinea) is a true mini-catt, with plants that are only 4” tall.  The dark purple-red flowers are flat and produced twice a year.  This cross was a huge success, with many customers still asking for them.  Here is your opportunity to get the exact remake.  Here is a Picture from the first cross.

The flowers of Star Fire (Lc. Trick or Treat x Rubescence) are deep red and produced 5-7 on a strong stem.  This grex was made to further develop clusters of intensely-colored, deep red flowers, held high on sturdy stems.

Pot. Little Circle (Pot. Golden Circle 'OPRL' x Pot. Little Toshie 'Gold Country' AM/AOS)

Golden Circle (Blc. Goldenzelle x Slc. Circle of Life) is one of my most reliable breeding plants.  The cultivar name 'OPRL' stands for Orange Petals Red Lip.  'OPRL' imparts size, shape, color and the habit of flowering two or three times a year.  Little Toshie 'Gold Country' (Sc. Beaufort x Blc. Toshie Aoki) is the best cultivar of this delightful grex.  It flowers 2-3 times a year with superb, flat, bright yellow flowers and dark red lips. This cross has amazing potential!  Plants are expected to produce flowers with superior form in colors ranging from yellow to orange.  All will have contrasting red lips, and they will flower twice a year.  A second group of this same cross is also available (SVO 6546), as is the reciprocal cross (SVO 6563), providing a great opportunity to see the influence of pollen vs. capsule parent.

Slc. New Hybrid (Slc. Donna Pasanen 'SVO' x Slc. Tropical Star 'Peter's')

How about a near-mini-catt with stems of flared flowers?   This cross is about reducing plant size while maintaining the charm and flower count of its larger relatives.  Donna Pasanen (Lc. Trick or Treat x Slc. Dream Cloud) has great color with red flares in nice clusters of 5-6 blooms.  Tropical Star (Lc. Tropical Song x Sl. Pole-Star) is a mini-catt with very attractive flared flowers.  This grex was developed by Peter T. Lin of Diamond Orchids and is tremendously charming.  When breeding for longer stems of 5-7 flowers, plants tend to be taller, but in this case the plants should max out at 8-10” tall.  The 5-7 flowers will be flared in sunset colors with red lips and held well on nice stems.

'Volcano Queen' has 13-15 well-arranged red flowers on a long sturdy stem.  Star Fire (Lc. Spotted

Spotted flowers have been a favorite of mine for years. Seeing those wonderful spots in the heat of summer is a spectacular sight. Breeding for the perfect spotted compact modern Cattleya is the goal here.  The plant of Green Emerald (C. Elizabeth Mahon x C. Mark Jones x Jungle Gem) has a proven history as a breeding plant, with many superior qualities: good flower size and form, strong yellow color with dark red spotting, a compact plant stature under 10” tall, and the ability to flower twice a year. I can hardly wait to see these bloom!

Landate (C. leopoldii x C. aclandiae) looks a lot like a floriferous C. aclandiae with 4-6 very showy, fragrant flowers.  The 'SVO' cultivar was a gift, and came from the breeding program of Roy Tokunaga.  The schilleriana has the appearance of a tetraploid but hasn't been confirmed.  Its flowers are exceptionally large and have a surprisingly hard substance. Which brings us to the grex Mr. Bojangles,..  With these three bifoliate species (aclandiae, leopoldii, schilleriana), we can be assured that the flowers will be a dark chestnut brown with darker spotting and a broad intense magenta lip, plus a spicy fragrance.  These are going to look like super improved schillerianas!  To the best of my knowledge, this grex has not been widely offered.  Here's your chance to get something great!

Slc. New Hybrid (Slc. Mem Trudi Marsh 'SVO' x Slc. Angel's Fantasy 'Solar Flare' FCC/AOS)

Candy striped mini-catts…I like the sound of that!  Here is the first of several crosses I made toward that goal.  Mem. Trudi Marsh (Tangerine Jewel x Sl. Cosmic Delite) is such a good cross!  The plants are true minis at just 4” tall, and to get an idea of how nice they are, just take a look at these pictures 1, 2, 3. The FCC/AOS for Angel's Fantasy 'Solar Flare' (Fire Fantasy x Bright Angel) says it all.  It's the top of its class; take a look at the photo!  Excellent flares on mini plants.  Very Limited Supply.

Slc. New Hybrid (Slc. Jillian Lee 'SVO's Titan' x Slc. Seagulls Apricot 'SVO Brilliance')

The grex Jillian Lee (Sc. Beaufort x Sl. Orpetii) has excellent round shape, carrying red-orange flowers with a red lip and yellow throat.  This is an easy grower that flowers 2 or 3 times a year.  Seagulls Apricot (Slc. California Apricot x Soph. coccinea) has a history of breeding high quality offspring.  It intensifies color and imparts wide petals, improved flower size and a twice-a-year flowering habit. These will mature at less than 6” tall, bloom in bright orange-red colors with red lips, and be cute round flowers about 2.5-3” across. Expect flowers in mid winter and again in the fall.

When was the last time you saw Sc. Beaufort (C. luteola x Soph. coccinea) for sale?  Both parents are considered tetraploids and occurred as mutations in the cloning process.  The plant of 'Harford's Elmwood 4-N' received an 89 point AM/AOS - Wow!  By pairing these two, we hope to get progeny as good as or even better than the parents.  Several have flowered and are proving that the offspring from this sib cross are every bit as good as the parents.  Very Limited Supply.

The plants are only 2 ½“ tall - a micro-mini Cattleya!   These began to flower in the summer like alaorii; I predict they will also flower in the late winter like Beaufort.  Plants are flowering size in 3” pots.  This is a great plant for windowsill growers or hobbyists with limited space.

Superbly formed bright orange mini-catts will be produced here.  Golden Circle (Blc. Goldenzelle x Slc. Circle of Life) is one of my most reliable breeding plants.  I am often asked what is meant by 'OPRL' - Orange Petals Red Lip.  I use it to impart size, shape and color; it also flowers two or three times a year.  The Beaufort has a long heritage as a prolific breeder.  It has a tendency to reduce plant size, improve flower form and bloom twice a year.  These plants are flowering size in 3” pots and will mature at 4-5” tall.  Expect flowering in the early spring and again in the fall. Similar to 6274 and 6350.

This is one of the best solid red mini-catts available and will easily bloom in 3” pots. Both of the parents are tetraploids.  Orpetii is a primary hybrid of (L. pumila x Soph. coccinea), and coccinea 'Higher Ground' originated in Japan and is one of the very best, with perfectly flat 3” flowers.  The genetic makeup of this grex is approximately 75% coccinea and 25% pumila.  These are proving to have larger flowers that the original cross. These look like super good Soph. coccineas, but the plants are much easier to grow and bloom.

Coerulea

In Cattleyas the 'coerulea' color or 'blue' as it is referred to, is very intriguing and rare in nature. In the early years of blue breeding there were not many known species, so breeding was limited to a few possibilities. Today, we have many species and hybrids to breed with, and the quality of blue flowers has been improving rapidly. Don't miss the spotted blue crosses…These are a great addition for the discriminating collector.

It has excellent flower size, shape, substance and a blooming habit far superior to others.  Both parents have a history of developing great offspring, and combined they will be amazing!  Expect large, full-shaped flowers in coerulea with darker blue lips, carried on small plants only 6-7” tall that bloom twice a year. C. leopoldii (C. leopoldii 'SVO 52' x C. leopoldii 'SVO Prince')

This is an exceptionally fine pairing of two superior plants.  Breeding bifoliate Cattleya species that are slow to mature requires that only the best parental stock be used.  'SVO 52' was named when it bloomed with an unprecedentedly high 52 flowers on a single inflorescence, and it topped that total last year with 54!  'SVO Prince' has remarkable flower color, shape and substance, and I consider it to be the best of my leopoldii.  These will take a while to mature, but let me assure you these are some of the best leopoldii parent plants available, and the seedlings are worth growing if you want the very finest.  A few tips on growing these.  They root just after the new growth matures in summer, and that's when to repot.  These require a winter rest period, so water sparingly from late November through April.  I water once every 14 -18 days during this time period.

It is proving to be an excellent parent, with dominance for color, strong stems and bloom period.  Laughing Boy (Lc. Dennis Olivas' x Blc. Love Sound) has yellow flowers with red flares on the petals and sepals, held on strong upright stems.  Great stems and clusters of flowers are assured.  Predicting colors is a bit more difficult.  I am expecting mostly reds; however, some will have flared flowers.  As they mature, these plants will develop into nice flowering specimens.

Pot. New Hybrid (Pot. Roy's Magic 'Chinese New Year' x Slc. Golden Wax 'Lone Star II' HCC/AOS)

Red and yellow is a welcoming color combination in January, so how about yellow flowers and red flares?  The blooms of Roy's Magic (Pot. Burana Beauty x Lc. Tokyo Magic) are produced from a robust plant on strong stems that hold 5-7 yellow flowers with red flares above the foliage.  As a bonus, this flowers in late January and again in late summer.  Golden Wax (Slc. Kauai Starbright x C. Chocolate Drop) also blooms in late January with big clusters of waxy bright yellow flowers held above the foliage. Expect strong stems holding clusters of flowers, many of which will be flared, but a percentage will also come in solid colors.

Blc. New Hybrid (Blc. Carolina Orange D'or 'Krull-Smith' AM/AOS x Lc. Tropical Aurora 'SVO')

Carolina Orange D'Or (Carolina Golden D'Or x Blc. Malworth) blooms with deep orange flowers of excellent shape and substance, I think the 'Krull-Smith' cultivar is the best of the cross. Tropical Aurora (Lc. Aussie Sunset x Lc. Tokyo Magic) has an amazing flower color, a rarely-seen intense yellow.  The plant is vigorous and compact, with strong upright stems, and blooms in late March and April.  Very robust plants have resulted from this pairing.  Flowers will be full-shaped golden yellows with red lips, and strong stems will hold 5-9 blooms.

Lc. Candy Corn (Lc. Trick or Treat 'Orange Magic 'AM/AOS x C. Dubiosa 'Scully's' HCC/AOS)

This cross was originally made at Stewart Orchids, and the parents used here are most likely the same as in the original cross.  I have always admired it but was unable obtain any plants for my collection, so I made the cross myself!  The best from the original cross had white flowers with bright, bold canary-yellow flares and a yellow lip.  These have excellent plant vigor and will be very interesting.

Lc. Naranja en Flor (Lc. Spring Fires 'Lenette' #3' x Lc. Trick or Treat 'Orange Magic' AM/AOS)

The name of this grex, Naranja en Flor, is Spanish for “Orange in Flower.”  I was so excited by the potential that I made this cross three times this year!  Over the years, I have been impressed by the breeding qualities of both Trick or Treat and Spring Fires.  I am so confident that these will turn out great, I'll bet money!  And I'm not a betting man…  These will have strong stems holding 10-15 or more starry orange to red flowers above the foliage in March.  Mature plants will be 14-16” tall and produce a spectacular display.  How's that for confidence in a prediction?  The reciprocal is offered as SVO 6245 and SVO 6737.

The cross was originally made at Stewart Orchids.  I always admired this grex but was unable to get any plants for my collection, so I made the cross myself!  These were high-flower-count plants, many with 9-15 blooms per stem.  The best cultivars produce multi-colored flowers in lavender-pink with darker lavender-pink splashes and brilliant golden tips.  Excellent plant vigor and very interesting flower color possibilities!

Pot. New Hybrid (Pot. William Farrell 'Native Son' x Lc. Guess What 'SVO' AM/AOS)

Love Passion (William Farrell x Trick or Treat; offered as SVO 6741) has been excellent. This cross is taking that breeding one step further.  William Farrell (Pot. Helen Veliz x Bc. Llano) has soft peach-colored flowers with wonderful form and beautiful arrangement.   Instead of using Trick or Treat, one of its successful offspring, Guess What (Blc. Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat) was chosen.  Guess What has many of the good qualities of Trick or Treat: well arranged flowers and high flower count on sturdy stems.  Waikiki Gold modified the color and shape to a rich orange-yellow with wider/fuller floral segments.  I predict that these will be bright golden-orange flowers on strong stems of 5-9 well arranged blooms.  I am looking forward to seeing this flower!

Robust plant growth and productive flowering from this cross.
